We know how hard it can be make the decision to buy a horse, and also how difficult the decision can be to send your horse away for training. We try to treat each horse and owner as individuals whether you are buying a horse, or sending to us for training, or visiting for lessons we try to talk to you about what you want. The same applies to demonstrations we carry out for various different companies and events. We want you to have what you want and work with you to that end.

Tracy Haynes and Jays Centrefold "Angel"
Dear David and Sarah
Words cannot express how happy I am with the outcome of this
year’s show season for me and for my little “Angel” (Jays Centrefold).
I would never have guessed when I saw that bundle of fur
clinging to her mum in the field that I would ever be in a position now of
qualifying for the 2008 World Show in Yearling Mares and be sent a huge bundle
of paperwork to that effect and the chance to buy one of those flashy buckles!
Having lost a young horse in 2006 I was not really convinced
that having another young horse was the way to go but both of you and your
dedicated team convinced me otherwise.
It would not be right to single out individuals as you are all such hard
workers, more than I feel people give you all credit for, but I feel I should
give thanks to Sarah Tibbles who has put up with all my silly “owner questions”
and has always been a great source of help to me. I hope she continues her
career with you and look forward to seeing her next year.
Living so far away I do miss the daily contact with Angel
but thanks to Lindsay and her weekly updates I don’t really feel that I am
missing out too much and my heartfelt thanks to her for making it more bearable
for me.
I look forward with great excitement to the 2009 season
although the toughest challenge I fear of all is to fall upon us – me riding!
At least it won’t be till the end of the year will it David……
Thank you all again so much and I hope you have a Happy
Christmas and a Prosperous and even more successful New Year.
Best Regards
Tracy Haynes

Emma Walsh On Her First Ever Western Lesson
I have thoroughly enjoyed my first ever western lesson, and only wish I'd found this style of riding sooner! It certainly lived up to and went beyond my expectations. Having never ridden western before I was a little apprehensive but I needn’t have worried. Horse creek farm has a really calm atmosphere and that filters through to the horses and everyone involved with it.
Both Sarah and David put me and my friends through our paces guiding us through the intricacies of the western style of riding. To our surprise it wasn’t as difficult as we’d thought and we picked it up quite quickly, this wouldn’t have been possible without David and Sarah’s encouragement and support for which we send our thanks.
The only problem now is following our fantastic day, we’ve come back home all inspired and keen to get some more western riding under our belt. Unfortunately, I think you may be seeing a lot more or us! Thanks again, for a really enjoyable and outstanding day!

Derek Dodimead and Sons Royal Award aka "Cody"
Being the wrong side of 40 and married to a very accomplished
English Horse woman, I had longed to ride for too long and knowing that to get
any where near my wife it would probably take me into my 60's to ride English to a
standard I would be happy with.
Having been excited by a programme on Western
riding on television I started to try to find a trainer, and it
didn’t take many calls to find out there was only one person to go to….David
Deptford. I still remember phoning him and his confidence and sense of humour
during my phone call confirmed to me that despite the 150 mile round trip that he
was the man for the job.
Considering that my previous riding experience had
been limited was an understatement and as far as I can remember as far as it
went was as a child on a beach pony or at a fete! To go from that to be cantering
on Snowy on my third lesson was unbelievable and I was hooked.
Since then every week for the last 18 months I
make that 3 hour round trip for my lesson and as soon as its over I cant wait for
the following week.
Both David and Sarah are so welcoming and in
such a short space of time it feels like I am visiting friends, and that I just
happen to be learning to ride at the same time.
Recently I had the distinct honour of being given
the opportunity of riding “Snipper” during one of my lessons, well to any one
out there who is new to riding let me tell you it was like being given the keys
toa Ferrari (but perhaps with even better brakes!). David’s approach
inspires confidence, enthusiasm and a desire to constantly improve, with such a
great facility and such incredible horses if you either want to try Western
riding or want to start to learn to ride then you really must pay Sovereign
Quarter Horses a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Kiki
Maurey and Snippers Soul Rebel (aka Ché)
I
bought Ché in 2000 as a 6 yo. Prior to that I had been
diagnosed with degenerative joint disease in my feet and ankles and
was about to give up riding. But when I saw Ché it was love
at first sight, I bought him without having ridden him. My instincts
were right and he’s given me a new lease of life and ‘the western
way’ is a much less pressurised way of riding for my joints. I’ve
spent years very slowly coming to grips with riding the western way
and competing in Pleasure, Trail, Horsemanship, Western Riding and
Reining at WES shows.
Last
year I joined BR and the NRHA for the first time and started reining
a bit more seriously. I brought Ché to Sovereign Quarter
Horses for 6 weeks in February 2008 for some ‘tuning’, mainly
because I liked David’s quiet patience, SQH’s fab new facilities
and the fact that SQH is the home of Snippers Heirogance. I felt that
my precious Ché would be in good hands and how right I was!
The thing with Snipper Babies is that you can tell exactly what
they’re thinking from their faces/eyes, and although I was only
able to visit SQH twice in that time, it was fantastic to see that
not only wasn’t Ché pining for home but he was clearly happy
and contented. He’s been nicknamed ‘Cuddles’ by the fantastic
SQH staff who all looked after him really well.
As
the saying goes, ‘the
proof of the pudding is in the eating’
and Ché has really improved in his reining performances, from
last October’s BR Champs show when the best we scored was 66 to 7
months later, us scoring 69½ and winning the Rookie class. I
know that maintaining this improved standard will take a lot of work,
especially as I can only use a borrowed arena 2 or 3 times a week.
But having done NLP training in September 07, I have to say that
success is just as much about mental skills as physical technical
ones.
I
feel very lucky and honoured to find a Snipper Baby that not only is
the most incredible all-around trusting family pet, but one that
clearly has talent (as well as heaps of patience to put up with me
all these years struggling to improve my riding!!!). My heartfelt
thanks to David and Sarah Deptford, Lindsay in the back office who
has been really helpful, and all the rest of the SQH team. Ché
will be back with you next spring for his annual MOT!

The Mead Family after their first Western Lesson
Dear David and Sarah,
What can I say you have renewed my faith in 'horsey' people. I have never
seen my daughter enjoy a lesson so much and to see her cantering not crying was
fantastic. It was a wonderful experience the money box is out counting up for
her own quarter horse; the johdpurs out and jeans in. Poor Della having to put up
with me on board i was thoroughly enjoying just seeing Sophie have such a
wonderful time. My husband has never really commented about riding before ..can't
seem to shut him up now!!!!! What you have is very special. You will be seeing a
lot of us from now on .......... Thank you.

John Faulkner (pictured with Old Vaquero- top
and MJays Beauty)
The day I first sat on
a horse, perched upon an English saddle feeling both out of my depth and somewhat out
of control I knew that riding “English” was not for me. I longed for just one
thing, to ride a horse like they do in America.... With this in mind I started a quest to find out more. My girlfriend
and I ended up making the four hour drive from Manchester to “The East Coast Show” at “Towerlands” to see for ourselves what it was all about.
Wow.. I’m sure we both stood out a mile, with our mouths wide open in disbelief
at what we saw…. well behaved, well mannered, well schooled horse doing manoeuvres
I never could have imagined… every one seemed so friendly so we asked a guy who
was stood with one of these beautiful horses how we could get in to this amazing
horse world.... “David Deptford is your man” came the reply “I will ring him
for you now” Before I knew it I had booked a lesson and the next week we headed
off to March!
My first experience
was truly inspirational I loved it .. sat astride ”Snowy” in the round pen with
David slowly and calmly explaining the finer points of riding, I knew that I had found a new world to explore and enjoy..
I booked another lesson for the following week and announced to my girlfriend
that from now on every Thursday we would be travelling the 240 miles, four hour
round trip for my lessons… she thought I was completely mad!!!!!
That was in July 2004
… David’s commitment and undying patience has taken me from first timer in a
round pen to competent rider in the reining pen …in just three years!! I now own “MJays Beauty” (the
love of my life) who is in foal to “Snippers Heirogance”, “Old Vaquero” my 6
year old Stallion who I show in the
both AQHA and BR reining classes, ”A Snip of A Jay” my three year old Gelding
who has won Reserve and Grand Champion at halter and is showing all the traits
of his sire’s “Jays Smokin Story”
talent, good looks and calm trainability, and the very sweet
“One Smart Jay” who I bought for my girlfriend (but that’s her story to tell). We have so much respect, love and
trust in David and Sarah.. All our horses have been bred, trained and supplied
by David; we are totally supported in all our showing and we know we can pick
up the phone anytime and get the support and help that he shares out in
abundance…I can’t thank him enough....
Three and A half years later we are still regularly
doing the mileage form Manchester to March and Sovereign Quarter Horses are now
in our blood, a part of our lives and we are so proud to be a part of the ever
growing and ever successful Sovereign Team!

Camilla Calverley-Halford with Wranglers Teeny Lena
"Unfairly and sometimes
inaccurately, the saying goes “those that can’t do it, teach it”.
In the increasingly competitive world of horse training; trainers are expected
to be Masters of the skill they teach, skillful teachers and effectively sports
psychologists.
David Deptford is without question all
three.
A first class rider and horse trainer David has remarkable
teaching skills and has the amazing ability of bringing out the best in whoever
he teaches. I first began training with David about 4 years ago
and being a nervous rider (wimp!) I needed constant encouragement which David
gave to me in spades. He quickly and accurately assesses the
horse’s ability, rider’s ability and most importantly applies a psychological
approach best suiting you – he’s incredibly patient but knows just when you’re
ready to be pushed. His brilliant tuition has led to my horse
Teeny and I gaining in excess of 50 first placings, numerous prizes and
successes such as Rookie of the Year, British Reining Non-Pro Champion 2007,
AQHA UK Rambo Amateur Reining Champion 2007 and my personal favourite, that elusive
70 reining score!
You are
always made to feel so welcome at SQH and Sarah is just as helpful and
encouraging as David. The recent state of the art facilities are
the icing on the cake because to be honest if all they had was a field and
nothing else we’d still all flock to them for training!! They get
results but they make it so much fun!"

Sarah Culverhouse with King Reed Heir "Feather"
"I am a very lucky person. David and Sarah Deptford and the entire
Sovereign Team have taken me on board, with one of their packages.
With such care, skill, thought and sheer talent, the team have got me
converted to the complete thrill of the Western Way. I have bought a
Snipper gelding from SQH and he and I are being trained together to
form a partnership. I have made some truly great new friends and
kindred spirits, who like me are learning something totally new and
loving every minute of being at SQH."

Amanda Griffiths with Snippers Mito Bella
"I have been lucky enough to have known the Deptfords
and be involved with SQH for over ten years. Despite my western riding, and
quarter horse ownership being somewhat erratic due to changes in careers,
finances, marriage and now children, it is entirely thanks to David and Sarah
that I have managed to keep my passion for the quarter horse
alive.
I can say without doubt that the SQH team have always
been professional, dedicated and understanding of the fledgling western
riding/QH enthusiast and this continues to be the case whether you want to just
have a few lessons, own, hack, breed or show at the highest level - the support
is the same and always there.
I am now in the exciting position to own a gorgeous 5
year old daughter of Snippers Heirogance, called Snippers Mito Bella who David
and I have shown in Halter classes very successfully. I am really looking
forward to the show season ahead and trying our hand at some more ridden events.
However, due to family commitments, showing without the SQH team's support,
training and involvement would be almost impossible - and not nearly so much
fun!
I am proud to be able to call the Deptfords my friends
and also to be part of the SQH success story".

Hollie Wright and Jays Hotshot Story
"Following too many riding tumbles, and “heart in the mouth
moments” over my 20 year “English style” riding career I had hung up my riding
hat for good……….. until I met Gunner.
Gunner was my first experience of an American quarter horse. David, of Sovereign Quarter Horses gently took
Gunner through his paces, at this stage I was just a passenger, but I was wowed
with the ride. David patiently taught me over the next few months how to “spin”
and then to “stop”, each of these movements take only the slightest move from
the rider, it really was breathtaking.
A year on and I am now the proud owner of Jays Hotshot Story
(Lewis to his mates) a stunning sorrel gelding bred by Sovereign Quarter
horses. We recently enjoyed our first
AQHA event where Lewis won best aged gelding amongst other placings. The whole “Sovereign experience” from first
ride to quarter horse ownership has been a complete pleasure".

Demonstrations
"I have commissioned the
services of David Deptford of Sovereign Quarter Horses for Broadgate
Events in London for the past two years. The brief was a tall order, no
warm up arena, in the middle of London with an audience who had very
little knowledge of the equestrian world. David captured the spectators
with a brilliant demonstration which was entertaining and educational.
He is a great ambassador to the Quarter Horse and to Western
Riding/Reining"

The Helpful Horse Group
Set up a few years ago
with the aim of helping people who have suffered mental ill-health to move
further along the road to recovery. They use the deep empathy of horses to
empower people, to give them respite from their problems, and to guide them into
positive ways of thinking. Every week they meet to do something with horses;
grooming, riding, ploughing, observing, and always learning.
"Of course our aim is to have fun, so when we found Sovereign Quarter
Horses we were excited by the prospect of trying a new skill. Although
it is 150 mile round journey, (we are based near Norwich), five of us
made it to SQH on the 27th November. We were made welcome and felt
very much at home. Meeting the horses was very relaxed, and two of the
group were in the saddle in no time. We were awe-struck by the horses,
and appreciated the kindness of the instruction. Everyone had a ride,
the smiles were enormous, and now we all want a quarter horse of our
own.
Because of David, Sarah, Lindsay, Hobby and Snowy we
had a brilliant time; everyone was on cloud nine, and will be talking about it
for ever (or 'til the next visit). It did everyone so much good - thank
you."
