Almost Totally Western 09

We love Western and the American Quarter Horse!

Western riding is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in the UK and Europe today, SQH are, and have been for over 25 years at the forefront of breeding, training and producing Champion American Quarter Horses.  We want as many people as possible to be introduced to this exciting and achievable way of riding and also to become acquainted with the incredibly versatile American Quarter Horse.  We warn you though, Western and The American Quarter Horse can be addictive!

Over the years we have periodically hosted Open Days which have proved extremely popular.  Since 2007 we have been able to host Bigger and Better Open Days in our purpose built arena,  these Open Days showcase Western Riding and also we hope, bring together something for everyone.

In 2008, we jokingly called our Open Day Almost Totally Western, as the highlight of the day was a Dressage/Reining demonstration which proved very popular with hundreds of people attending the day, it was "Almost Totally Western"!

In 2009, we're building on 2008's success and focussing the demonstrations on the classes that our American Quarter Horses compete in.  Halter, Showmanship, Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation (yes, the American Quarter Horse competes in English tack as well) Trail, and Reining are all classes that One horse could compete in at a show.

In addition, we're very excited to have with us on Saturday 11th April, Gillian Higgins, who offers Equine Lecture Demonstrations giving a fascinating insight into how the horse works.  Gillian will examine applied equine anatomy, biomechanics and physiology. This is a serious subject presented in an interesting and informative fashion. Painting the skeleton and musculature on the side of one of our American Quarter Horse will really help to bring this subject to life.  These lectures explain the significance of biomechanics to:

Improving performance, reducing Injury, and maintaining top physiological condition.

Gillian Higgins is a dynamic and enthusiastic presenter, and you will be able to watch her painting the horse prior to the demonstration/lecture with David Deptford.  This informative and interactive talk is of interest to professional riders, coaches, trainers, Riding Clubs, Associations, Colleges, BHS Students, Therapists, in fact anyone who has an interest in their own horse and it's welfare.

We've also got Trade Stands, a Western Farrier Demonstration and the Rhinestone Clothing mounted Western Fashion show.  With an onsite cafe and plenty of parking, the day is jam packed with demos and interesting things to see and people to talk to.
