Page 3 of 3 Remembering that most people had only seen racing, show jumping and endurance, reining was a huge eye-opener for them, particularly the manoeuvrability and control of the horse. Reining was featured in the Gulf News and David gave an interview for Dubai TV.
The Grand Finale was structured on the role of the horse with man showing the horse at war with Roman chariots, the horsemen of Genghis Khan and mediaeval Knights jousting. Then the horse at play, being used more for sport, with all FEI disciplines being demonstrated. All disciplines had a minute under the spotlight, during which David and Jay demonstrated the spin in the centre of the arena. David was rubbing shoulders with William Fox-Pitt and Mark Todd for Eventing, Richard Davison for Dressage, Boyd Exell for Driving, David Broome for Show jumping, Anja Barwig and Kai Vorberg for Vaulting and the Dubai Mounted Police showed off their endurance skills.
The Finale took place after the Grand Prix Show jumping at about 10.30pm in the floodlight arena. HH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein then presented the magnificent Al Maktoum Memorial Perpetual Cup to the winning rider Jessica Kurten.
We left Dubai in a sandstorm, on the same fantastic aircraft that had brought us and we arrived in Stansted to a cold, wet and muddy England. Our trip was tremendous and we have met many kind and wonderful people. It was an unforgettable experience, truly ground breaking. It would be unfair to suppose we could have achieved all this without help from the support of British Reining and our marvellous home team of Andrew Plant and Amy Loveday, who looked after our horses while we were away.
